Organ
interactive sound installation
2010

ORGAN is a series of instruments that detect physiological rhythms and signals. One uses a technology called EEG (brainwave sensor) to control an electric organ. Notes on an organ are activated as the EEG monitors the participant’s level of cognitive awareness. The generated tones increase in complexity as the participant’s awareness drops.

Another instrument translates participants’ heartbeats into drum beats. A heart rate monitor amplifies the users’ heart beats onto a bass drum. Two users can hear the syncopation of their hearts by experiencing the piece simultaneously.

While many contemporary technologies encourage a hyper-awareness of things, these instruments instead encourage a withdrawal from the economy of attention.
